Charlotte City Council extends its data center moratorium to October 2027

The Charlotte City Council voted unanimously to extend the city’s data center moratorium by 11 months, to Oct. 18, 2027, WFAE reported Oct. 27. The moratorium halts approval of new data center permits; existing permits are not affected. District 6 Council Member Kimberly Owens said the only thing standing in the way of “some smart regulatory steps” is that the city cannot downzone (make existing zoning more restrictive), which WFAE said state law prohibits. The council is urging the General Assembly to give cities more authority over data centers in its next session. Residents near proposed data centers have raised concerns about noise, pollution, energy and water use, per WFAE.

A Saint Francis' satyr, a small brown butterfly with eyespots on its wings, clinging to a grass blade

About the art. Saint Francis' satyr (Neonympha mitchellii francisci). Endangered, US Endangered Species Act (listed 1994). Collectors and the loss of its wetland habitat, above all the wet meadows made by beavers, left it in a few small colonies, all on Fort Bragg, per the US Fish and Wildlife Service. We run an endangered species from the story's region on every data center story; the animal is not part of this story unless the story says so. Why we do this.
