Dartmouth provost Santiago Schnell resigns after review finds undisclosed AI use
Dartmouth Provost Santiago Schnell has resigned and is leaving the university after a faculty-led committee found he “used AI to meaningfully alter his writing in violation of at least one publication’s AI use and/or disclosure requirement,” President Sian Leah Beilock announced Oct. 28, per the Valley News; Beilock wrote that leaders must “model the transparency and human judgment that we expect from our students and scholars.” The committee reviewed his logs from Dartmouth’s enterprise AI tool, Claude, and his emails rather than using AI-detection tools; it found he did not make disclosures required by a journal and by a national newspaper, said his account of a forthcoming article “understates the nature of the Provost’s actual AI use,” and did not recommend discipline. Schnell told Beilock in a Sept. 22 email that disclosure “would have been the best approach” and did not respond to the Valley News’s request for comment.
