CDT releases Selective Memory tool for moving AI chat histories privately

The Center for Democracy & Technology released Selective Memory, an open-source tool on GitHub that lets people edit their downloaded archive of AI chatbot conversations before uploading it to another service, choosing which chats to include and finding and redacting chats with personal data, CDT said Oct. 28. Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini all let users download their past conversations as a single file, but only Google’s Gemini and, more recently, Meta’s Muse accept uploads of chats from another service, and none lets users pick which chats to include, per CDT. CDT says Google and Meta have made clear they will use uploaded chats to train future models by default, and calls its tool a prototype of what AI companies should offer.
