xAI offers to buy Southaven homes if owners stay out of power plant noise suit

Real estate agents acting for xAI have gone door to door in the Colonial Hills neighborhood of Southaven, Mississippi, offering to buy houses on condition that the owners not join a lawsuit over noise from the gas-turbine power plant that feeds the company’s nearby data centers, the Guardian reported Oct. 28. A letter from MZX, the xAI subsidiary that operates the site, says it “requires property for its business purposes”; DeSoto County records show MZX has bought five homes since Oct. 9, and a realtor told one resident, in a recording heard by the Guardian, that the target is 418 homes with 18 owners already agreeing. xAI did not answer the Guardian’s questions on those numbers and denies the claims in the lawsuit, filed by three residents in June; Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite called the purchases housing for employees and “a goodwill gesture,” and said city monitors have not recorded a breach of the local 70-decibel noise limit.

A pallid sturgeon, long flat snout and upturned tail, side-on against a white background

About the art. Pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus). Endangered, US Endangered Species Act (listed 1990). Dams and channelization turned the Missouri and Mississippi rivers into reservoirs and deep, straight channels, erasing the varied shallow habitat it needs, per the US Fish and Wildlife Service. (source) We run an endangered species from the story's region on every data center story; the animal is not part of this story unless the story says so. Why we do this.
